THE TECHNOLOGY

OPERATING MICROSCOPE

Operating microscope

The introduction of magnification into dentisty has not only given clinicians the ability to maximise their clinical skills, but also the potential to successfully treat more complex problems. Nowhere is this more true than in the field of endodontics and the operating microscope has now become an essential tool for the contemporary endodontist.

The tasks of identifying root canals and removing iatrogenic blockages have become much more predictable procedures.

Evaluation of any hairline cracks present within teeth enables a more predictable prognosis to be given. The operating microscope has also allowed endodontic microsurgery to evolve together with the development of dedicated microsurgical instruments.

DIGITAL IMAGING

Digital imaging

Good communication forms an essential part of quality patient care. Digital radiography facilitates patient involvement throughout the process from diagnosis to treatment completion and review.

APEX LOCATORS

Not to use an apex locator is like flying a plane without radar!

The later generations of these devices have taken the hit and miss out of working length determination which now can be made with great accuracy. Remember, the apical foramen rarely coincides with the position of the radiographic apex and can be up to 3.8mm away!

NiTi ROTARY FILES

Since the rotary revolution, cleaning and shaping root canal systems has become a more predictable procedure. The use of NiTi alloy files have also greatly added to patient comfort during treatment.

The systems I use are ProTaper (Dentsply-Maillefer) and BioRaCe (FKG) complemented by hand files.

ULTRASONICS

Used in conjunction with the operating microscope, specially designed ultrasonic tips have given us the ability to perform very delicate procedures in a controlled manner. These include exploration for canal orifices, removal of intracanal blockages, retrieval of separated instruments and post removal.
